The Month of All the Things or Keeping It Simple, Take 2 #IWSG

First of all, I owe everyone an apology. I completely and totally failed at visiting blogs in May, but I do have a good reason for being absent online. Or I hope you'll think it is a good enough reason. You see, a promotional opportunity came up for Reborn for mid-June. At first, I planned to just update the files for Reborn (second edition) and leave everything else as is, but since I haven't done any real promotion since, um, like 2015, I thought I should be like Alexander Hamilton and not throw away my shot. So I tossed Soul Reaper aside and pivoted toward The Fate Challenges and basically did all the things I'd originally planned to do January-April and didn't do in May. It was a pretty crazy four weeks, but I'm proud of the work I've done, even if it meant abandoning emails/social media/blogging.

So the lesson, children, is be like Alexander Hamilton and don't throw your shot away. *smiles*

That said, I am still striving for simplicity and hope to reach it one of these days.

June 7th IWSG Day Question: Did you ever say "I quit"? If so, what happened to make you come back to writing? I haven't said "I quit" to writing. Publishing, yes. Writing, no. Writing has become such an intrinsic part of who I am. I need writing. It's too cathartic to me to give up. At least at this time. Will there come a day where I'll say "I quit"? It's possible.

As above, I mentioned doing all the things the past four weeks. I did finish the outline for A Soul to Take (Soul Reaper #3), and I had started reading through A Soul to Save and creating my A-Z Glossary for the Soul Reaper series when my well-laid plans were tossed aside in favor of The Fate Challenges. So what all did I do? I'll tell you.

I designed new covers for The Fate Challenges. It wasn't my first time designing a cover, but it was my first time for doing more than adding fonts and other minor changes to it. I am pleased with how they turned out. As you can see, I went with symbolic images, and I do feel like the covers tell the stories.

I hand-drew (pen/pencil) new maps for The Fate Challenges and People of Foxwick and Their Neighbors. I scanned the images and used paint.net to add the compass images and the fonts.

I formatted and designed the cover art for The Cherie Reich Sampler, which is available for free to newsletter subscribers. The Cherie Reich Sampler contains Part I of Reborn, Once upon a December Nightmare from Once upon a Nightmare: A Collection, A to Z Flashes of Foxwick, and "Lady Death" from People of Foxwick and Their Neighbors.

I re-formatted and uploaded the e-versions of People of Foxwick and Their Neighbors and Once upon a Nightmare: A Collection.

I added in nearly 600 minor changes to Reborn, re-formatted the e-version of it, and uploaded it to retailers. Because of the changes, I have put Reborn on sale for 99c through the summer.

I line-edited and proofread Determined (a bonus novella set within The Fate Challenges) as well as formatted it. Determined is available for download for free from my website only.

I did content edits and line edits and proofread Marked (The Fate Challenges #1.5) as well as formatted this novella. Marked is available through several retailers. Let's see. I also designed the chapter headings for The Fate Challenges and edited several stories for the upcoming Spirits in the Water anthology. There is an excerpt from my story "The Folding Point" on the Untethered Realms' blog. I have recently gone through the outline to Forged, so I can begin editing it this month too. I also updated my blog look (new banner, colors, etc.).

Hmm, I think that's all I did in May and early June. I might just fall over now.

My June goals are:

- Start editing Forged (The Fate Challenges #2).

- Revise the outline for Destined (The Fate Challenges #3).

- Catch up on emails and social media, including blogging.

- Edit the rest of the stories in Spirits in the Water.

- Help my friend with her novella series.

- Update my websites.

- Catch up on reviewing books. I think I'm like seven or eight books behind right now. Maybe more.

What are your June goals?

The most recent book I finished reading (besides my own over and over again) is Rachel Morgan's Glass Faerie (Creepy Hollow #7). I loved, loved, loved this book and series. If you haven't read it, you should. Seriously.

Ghost Dancer by Christine Rains

Nina Azure helps spirits move on, but when she comes across Ben Moore's ghost, she's all too eager to keep him earthbound in Christine Rains' Ghost Dancer. Nina is part of a three-person team called the Paramours, who use sexual energy to help ghosts carry on to the afterlife. This novelette focuses on Nina and Ben. Nina is a beautiful character who knows she must do the right thing, even though her heart says otherwise. I loved the imagery of the drums and heartbeats. Ben is definitely a match for Nina, and his story tugged on my heart. Their chemistry was smoking and tinged with sadness. Rains balances the erotic with sweet romance. The first book of the Paramours series, Ghost Dancer by Christine Rains adds a unique twist on ghost hunting and is a perfect adult bedtime read.

A Faerie's Revenge by Rachel Morgan

Discovering Chase's secret was only the beginning for Calla Larkenwood in Rachel Morgan's A Faerie's Revenge. Calla shows a lot of growth through all she faces in this book. The dialogue between Calla and her Guardian friends often had me laughing. Certain instances in this book brought me to tears, and there is this really swoonworthy scene, but you'll have to read it for yourself. A Faerie's Revenge keeps the action high, the pace moving swiftly, and feels like a solid bridge between not only A Faerie's Secret and the next book in Calla's trilogy but also between Violet's story in Creepy Hollow 1-3 and whatever the last trilogy will be about. Rachel Morgan knows how to keep the twists coming. This novel gave me a book hangover. I didn't want it to end, and I am so looking forward to the next book. If you're a fan of the Creepy Hollow series, then you'll love A Faerie's Revenge by Rachel Morgan. And if you haven't read the books yet, then I highly recommend you to start at The Faerie Guardian and catch up.

Wonderland by Jennifer Hillier

Vanessa Castro's first day as Seaside's deputy chief starts off less than wonderful in Jennifer Hillier's Wonderland when a dead body turns up at a local amusement park called Wonderland. Told from various view points, this novel amps up the tension as each person adds to the mystery and intrigue of the story. I didn't know quite who to suspect as the persons of interest list expanded. Seaside seems like one of those quaint little towns on the surface, but the crimes let the reader know no town--big or small--is safe. I rather enjoyed the creepy atmosphere of the park Wonderland, particularly on its Elm Street with the Clown Museum. The park itself became a character and a wonderful one at that. I was excited to see an old character from Hillier's other books appear in this one too. The tension increases to a killer ending. Wonderland by Jennifer Hillier kept me turning the pages and is a suspenseful read.

The Body Institute by Carol Riggs

Morgan Dey pays a high price to help out the ones she loves in Carol Riggs's The Body Institute. Riggs has created a complex futuristic world. With the government's need to have healthy citizens, the Body Institute was formed to help teens lose the extra pounds by implanting mind-maps of Reducers into the Loaners' bodies. The Reducers work out and lose the pounds and then return to their own bodies while the Loaner returns to his/her original body and works to keep the newly lost weight off. As someone who has been on the Loaner end in the weight battle, too many times I've wished I could wake up a new thinner me. As Morgan tries to lose a hundred pounds for her newest Loaner body, I felt a true connection with her and shared in Morgan's joys and sorrows. I love how the novel revolves around the philosophy of whether or not we are our minds or our bodies or some combination of the two. The romance between Morgan and a fellow Reducer was super sweet and adorable. They had a wonderful soul connection with each other. The action in this science fiction story brought me to the edge of my seat, and I shed so many tears with Morgan at what happens to her. The end of the story was satisfying and a complete standalone tale, but I'd love to read more in this world Riggs has created in the future. The Body Institute by Carol Riggs has become one of my favorite reads this year.

Pirate Hunters by Robert Kurson

John Chatterton and John Mattera stop their quest in finding a treasure ship and seek out the legendary Golden Fleece, the pirate ship of Joseph Bannister, in Robert Kurson's Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship. This nonfiction book focuses on deep sea divers John Chatterton and John Mattera. The glimpses of their pasts was interesting and helped show why they were so obsessed in discovering the Golden Fleece. I loved learning more about the pirate Joseph Bannister and the history of the Golden Age of Piracy. Kurson takes the reader on an adventure. I felt Chatterton and Mattera's frustrations as they searched for the ship and kept coming up empty. A few places the pace was a little slow and tedious, but thankfully, those parts are few and far between. I would recommend Pirate Hunters by Robert Kurson to anyone who loves learning about pirates, the Golden Age of Piracy (1600s-1700s), and the fascinating lives of deep sea treasure hunters.

Masked Kiss by Christine Rains

A weekend of video games, hanging out with his Steampunk Quest friends, and enjoying the convention are all Josh Hanson had planned for, but when a dark-haired masked vixen captures his attention, he finds it hard to focus on anything but her in Christine Rains' Masked Kiss. I enjoyed reading this erotica story from a male point of view. Josh is geeky, sweet, and knows his video games. I liked how he wanted more than a con fling with Nat. The growth between the characters combined with all the hot and steamy scenes come together to make a satisfying story. Rains does an excellent job with the pacing, and I loved all the geeky fun. This novella can be read as a standalone or along with the other books in the Dice and Debauchery series, which takes place at the same gaming convention. If you're ready to get your geek on, then read Masked Kiss by Christine Rains.

EXCERPT FROM THE MIRACLE GIRL

Maybe it was best to make a clean break. College was over. Like she said, time to grow up.
