So February was a pretty epic fail on the writing front. I'm proud of what I rewrote/edited for the 3-4 days I worked on Forged, but I should have done more. A combination of lack of energy and an obsession for all things Stargate and physics helped me to push Forged to the side. At the rate I'm going, Forged may come out this year. It may not. I need to get back into rewriting it, though. But I also kinda need to watch Stargate and read about hyperspace, parallel universes, antimatter, dark energy/matter, etc. And then I have this idea for a science fiction series that does involve an Einstein-Rosen bridge portal (like Stargate with a device to travel between planets but many differences too), but I keep telling it no. At least until The Fate Challenges are published.

I must admit I'm pretty insecure about my special interest taking over all else.

What are you insecure about?

IWSG Question: How do you celebrate when you achieve a writing goal/finish a story? See. I knew I was doing something wrong. I never celebrate when I achieve a writing goal or finish a story. Maybe if I did, it might help to get to that "the end." I also don't write "the end" on a finished draft either. I'm weird like that.

March's goal is pretty much February's goal as well as January's goal. Write 20,000 words in Forged. If I accomplish that, then I'll be up to 38,000 words rewritten/edited. *crosses fingers*

What If It's All About Love #IWSG #SpecFic

My biggest insecurity this month is getting back on track with my rewrite/edit of Forged (The Fate Challenges #2). When I was working on the rewrite, everything was going well. I often was hitting 1,000-2,000 words per session, and I felt like what I was writing was shaping up into the novel I hope Forged will end up being. Unfortunately, I didn't get that many days to work on Forged during January, so I only rewrote 11,000 words instead of the 20,000 I was going for. So somehow I'm going to have to increase my pace because I would really love to have this rewrite finished by the end of April. Wish me luck!

February's question: What do you love about the genre you write in most often? Is everything an acceptable answer? I write speculative fiction, which is a fancy umbrella term featuring "what if" scenarios often in the genres of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. I suppose if I had to pick one thing I love about the genre is the ability to create new worlds or modify the ones existing around us. I can let my imagination run.

What is your insecurity this month? What do you love about the genre you write most often?

Though I did only rewrite 11,000 words in Forged instead of 20,000 words in January, I did finish a critique of my critique partner's newest novel.

I only have one main goal for February, which is rewrite/edit 20,000 words in Forged, which will put the manuscript up to 31,000 words (or about a third finished).

Happy New Year! It's hard to believe 2018 is upon us, but we've made it.

In 2017, I wrote 111,465 words and edited 908,937 words between my own work and other people's work. I've been on a writing hiatus since October 24, but I'm back writing as of January 1. And I'm trying to be more realistic of what I can accomplish. *crosses fingers* We'll see how it goes.

In 2018, my goals include:

• Publish Forged (The Fate Challenges #2) in mid-2018.
• Publish Elements of Untethered Realms (Elements of Untethered Realms 1-4) in October 2018.
• Rewrite and start editing Destined (The Fate Challenges #3) for a 2019 release.

I also hope to read at least twenty-four books, continue to critique for my critique partners, and schedule in the occasional breaks.

What are your goals for 2018?

OPTIONAL IWSG Day Question:What steps have you taken to put a schedule in place for your writing and publishing? For over two years, I wrote every single day. I don't plan to do quite that, but I am trying to do better about having reasonable goals and scheduling in some downtime too. For me, I need to remember writing is part-time. I have a full-time job, and it's too hard for me to treat writing as one too. So my plan is to have monthly goals and take one day at a time.

Since I'm trying to be more realistic about my goals, here is what I hope to accomplish in January.

• Rewrite/edit 20,000 words in Forged.
• Edit my friend's novel.

Yep, that's pretty much it. Five thousand words or so a week and I'll meet my writing goal, but I'm hoping to spend a few days writing/editing more so I can take a day or two off here and there.

December's question: As you look back on 2017, with all its successes and failures, if you could backtrack, what would you do differently?

I can think of three distinct things I would have done differently, but the last two bleed over into what I would have done differently in 2016 too.

1. Take a break. Thank you all for your kind comments on last month's IWSG post about my writing hiatus. It took a few weeks to settle into not writing/editing, but I am less anxious about not writing and editing. I've decided to take the rest of the month off so I can start the new year fresh.
2. Read Wired for Story: The Writer's Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers from the Very First Sentence by Lisa Cron much earlier than I did. I just finished this book, and it's amazing. True, I was doing some of these techniques subconsciously in my work, but the questions Cron has me asking my characters and scenes will make a difference (for the better, I hope!). It's given me so many ideas on how to take Forged and Destined to the next level.
3. Work on one project at a time (i.e. The Fate Challenges). While I don't necessarily regret working on Soul Reaper series, I do wish I'd used that time to focus on finishing up Forged and Destined instead. If so, then they would be out in the world now. Or at least much closer to publication. It's looking like mid-2018 for Forged and early 2019 for Destined. Live and learn. *sighs*

Changes are coming to my "Bookworm News" section.

Starting in January, Bookworm News will be in its separate post on the last day of the month. The post, if not including a guest post, will have its comments turned off. I'll still highlight what books I've read as well as what speculative fiction books were released. These posts are also available for cover reveals and guest posts, if anyone is interested.

But the biggest change is that I am no longer reviewing books I've read. I do not come to this decision lightly as I know how important reviews are, but they're causing me too much stress to write and are making reading not as enjoyable as it used to be. I will continue to rate what books I read on Goodreads and maybe even leave a sentence or two of what I loved, but I won't officially be reviewing books.

All the kingdoms of Wales are threatened when the Picts arrive in Mark Noce's Dark Winds Rising. Set several years after Between Two Fires, this novel follows Queen Branwen as she seeks to keep peace within her kingdom and her surrounding neighbors. The cunning and passionate Branwen matures throughout this story as she faces Queen Sab's sinister plot, which kept me guessing until the end. Noce makes the late 600s Wales come to life. I do hope there will be another book because the Queen Branwen series keeps getting better. An enchanting and fast-paced historical novel, Dark Winds Rising by Mark Noce is a must-read. September's Question: Have you ever surprised yourself with your writing?

YES! All the time.

While growing up, I never intended to be a writer. Though I've always had a great imagination, I was rather dreadful when it came to writing papers in English classes. The main reason was because I missed learning how to write a paper in high school, and I didn't learn how to write one until a college English class. In high school, I went from regular English 9 to Advanced English 10. Advanced English 9 and College-Bound and regular English 10 learned to write papers. I missed that all so important step. *sighs*

So, as you can probably imagine, I hated writing. In fact, I even told my AP English 12 teacher that I was going to move to a foreign country so I'd never have to write in English again. *laughs* Because I thought I was inept when it came to writing, every time I read something I've written since I've become a writer, I'm surprised and amazed.

Has your writing surprised you? What are your insecurities this month?

August was a surprisingly good month for completing my goals.

I finished editing Forged (The Fate Challenges #2), and it's now with my critique partners. I completed my outline edit of Destined (The Fate Challenges #3), formatted the manuscript, and have started editing it. I'm hoping to finish this edit by November 15, and I'm planning to work on Destined during weekdays.

I've been using weekends to work on Soul Reaper series, and I'm making progress on editing the outlines so I'll be ready to start edits and write books 3-5 eventually. I was hoping to start writing A Soul to Take (Soul Reaper #3) in October, but now I'm thinking I should finish the outlines and edit the books I've already written before writing A Soul to Take, especially if I want to have 1-2 Soul Reaper books published before the end of next year. We'll see how it goes.

A big shout out to Christine Rains for finishing her urban fantasy series Totem. All nine novellas are fantastic reads!

Untethered Realms is gearing up to publish the fourth Elements of Untethered Realms anthology. Spirits in the Water will be released in early October, and my story "The Folding Point" is in it. In August, I was busy reformatting the previous anthologies and getting some images ready for #4. Besides being one of the editors and having a story in the anthology, I am also the final proofreader and formatter. It's so much fun to see all of it come together.

Here are my September goals:
- Continue editing Destined. Ideally, I'd like to be at the midway point by the end of this month.
- Format, proofread, and publish (likely as a preorder for an October 2nd or 3rd release date) Spirits in the Water.
- Continue working on the outlines for Soul Reaper series.

Joyland by Stephen King

A summer job at the amusement park Joyland turns out to be more life changing than Devin Jones ever anticipated in Stephen King's Joyland. This novel unravels the mystery of Joyland and a girl's murder that took place there. Although there is little horror and the suspense is a very slow build, King excels in the characters he creates. I cared about Devin and the others in the book. The colorful and secret "Talk," the carnival language, added to the dialogue and the setting. Despite the slower pace than you typically find in thrillers/mysteries, Joyland by Stephen King kept me glued to the pages.

Poltergeist's Pleasure by Christine Rains

Clare McKinney seeks to prove her theories about poltergeists are true no matter the price in Christine Rains' Poltergeist's Pleasure. Clare is one of the Paramours--ghost hunters who use sexual energy to interact with ghosts. Her beliefs concerning poltergeists and sex have a way of getting Clare in a lot of trouble, but through her interactions with Zendal and her fellow Paramours, Clare finds a way to grow. Happy Monday! Since next Thursday (November 26) is Thanksgiving in America and I'll have a few days off from work, there will be no fourth Wednesday post. My next post will be the IWSG post on December 2.

I've still been writing every single day since July 1. I keep expecting to wake up and discover all those words were nothing more than a dream. Writing-wise, my focus has been on Forged and the bonus woodwose section for The Fate Challenges boxed set. As of today, I have fourteen chapters left to write in Forged and five scenes in the bonus woodwose section, and I've been averaging over 1000 words between the two projects within forty-five minutes.

My other goals haven't come together quite as well as the writing. I'm still hoping to make progress with edits for Marked, the read-through and notes of The Mission, and outlining Soul Reaper series, but we'll see how the rest of the month goes.

Here are my December goals:

Write 30 minutes a day in a primary project--Forged (The Fate Challenges #2).

Write 15 minutes a day in a secondary project--woodwose bonus scenes.
Outline Destined (The Fate Challenges #3)
Complete what I didn't finish in November: Marked edits, read-through/notes of The Mission, and outlining Soul Reaper series.

If November goals are completed, I will also add these items to my December goals:

Edit "On Day 168" and send to my first critique partner.
Start researching and outlining The Gaia Project serial.

Happy Wednesday! I can't believe we only have two months and a few days left of 2015.

On September 29, I finished the first draft of my short story "Folds in Life and Death," which came in at 6,360 words. I've since edited it to under the 6,000 word count limit and have one last proofread before submitting it later this week. On September 30, I completed the first draft of The Mission (The Gaia Project #1.1), which came in at 21,530 words. On October 24, I finished writing the first draft to the short story "On Day 168," which came in at 7,899 words.

I have continued writing every single day since July 1. This month, I've been working on Forged (The Fate Challenges #2) and the short story "On Day 168." Since I finished "On Day 168," I'm now writing the bonus woodwose section. I finished editing my friend's novel, published Mayhem in the Air, and will start working on the edits for Marked (The Fate Challenges #1.5) soon.

I have figured out my secondary project after I finish the bonus woodwose section for The Fate Challenges boxed set. The next series I plan to write is Soul Reaper (Urban Fantasy). The series will include a prequel novella and at least three novels.

Here are my November goals:
Write 30 minutes a day on a primary project - This goal still relates to Forged. Just 20 chapters to go!
Write 15 minutes a day on a secondary project. - I plan to continue writing the bonus woodwose section for the boxed set of The Fate Challenges.
Finish editing Marked and send it to my first critique partner.
Outline Soul Reaper series.

Writing Update: October Goals | Awesome Giveaway

Happy Wednesday! Since there is a fifth Wednesday this month, there will be no new blog post until October 7's IWSG post.

My goals from last month are going pretty well. I'm still writing every day, which surprises me. Using a timer has really helped my productivity. Like Pavlov's dog salivating at a bell's ring, as soon as I press "start" on the timer, I'm ready to write. I've been averaging 980 words in forty minutes between three projects: Forged (novel, The Fate Challenges), The Mission (novella, The Gaia Project #1.1), and the short story "Folds in Life and Death." Yesterday, I finished the final proofread and formatted Mayhem in the Air, which will be out this October. The UR anthology is up on Goodreads now.

I still have a friend's novel to edit as soon as she gets the manuscript to me.

Here are my October goals:

Primary Goal = Write 25-30 minutes a day. Forged is in this spot.

Secondary Goal = Write 12-15 minutes a day. The Mission will be my secondary project until I finish this novella, but I will slide "On Day 168" into this spot afterwards.

Finish writing, edit, and submit "Folds in Life and Death."

Edit Marked (The Fate Challenges #1.5).

Publish Mayhem in the Air.

I need to do some outlining soon. When I finish "On Day 168," I'll have the secondary goal ready for a new project, and right now I'm considering putting into that slot the rewrite of Virtuoso (The Cassandra Project #1), which is about a college student/violin virtuoso who develops telekinetic abilities after a car accident and the government man who's after her. But in order to be ready to rewrite Virtuoso, then I need to read through the very crappy first draft and make a new outline. But that'll be on the side and is not important yet to add to my goals.
