I Think I've Said Too Much #IWSG | October Goals | Bookworm News #SpecFic

The Insecure Writer's Support Group was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh. October's co-hosts are Olga Godim, Chemist Ken, Jennifer Hawes, and Tamara Narayan. Find the other IWSG participants here.
October's question: Have you ever slipped any of your personal information into your characters, either by accident or on purpose? The simple answer is yes.

I think it goes back to the guideline of "Write what you know." It would be nearly impossible to write without pulling on some sort of emotion, action, etc. that we've experienced in the past, even if we present it in a different way or from a different view. I think experience leads credence to our imagination.

That said, I have purposely written about events that happened to me. The best example is Once upon a December Nightmare from Once upon a Nightmare: A Collection. The main event that sets up the story actually happened to me in December 2002. I played off what occurred and expanded it into a horror story. Yes, even the dead deer were really in that clearing.

My unpublished YA contemporary novel Starred also features true incidents that happened while I participated in musical theater.

And I'm sure I'll find new things to insert into new stories too.

Don't forget about the IWSG Anthology contest! I had an idea in mind for a story, but I didn't know how to narrow it down to 3500-6000 words and didn't really have the time to write and edit it for the November 1st deadline. Plus, it took kept turning into a horror story in my head. So good news, I have a new horror story to write some day. Bad news, I have no story to submit for the next IWSG Anthology. Oh, well.

What are you insecure about this month?

For the past couple months, I've created a Word document to keep track of important dates, overall things I need to do, and then daily goals. It's really made a world of difference. So I did quite well on my goals for September.

I formatted a manuscript for a client. I proofread, formatted, and published Spirits in the Water (Elements of Untethered Realms #4). I edited the outlines of A Soul to Reap, A Soul to Keep, and A Soul to Take as well as reached the midway point in my novel Destined. I even found time to update Once upon a Nightmare: A Collection, the ebook and print versions.

I've also been thinking of my old Gravity series, and I have an idea of a new direction to take the characters. Now I don't know when I'll get back to it, but I'm excited about the new starting point.

As for October's goals, they include:
- Continue editing Destined. The third novel in The Fate Challenges series is over 92,000 words so far and will likely be as long as Reborn (around 95,000 words). I hope to be 75-85% finished with this edit by the end of the month.
- Update the print version of People of Foxwick and Their Neighbors with the new map and a few other minor tweaks.
- Write the outline for A Soul to Give (Soul Reaper #4).

And that's it. October is a lighter goals month than the previous ones.

Writing Update: October Goals

Happy Wednesday!

It's hard to believe there are only three more months left to this year! This month has been busy with helping out with a friend's collection as well as publishing Magna's Plea and writing stories in Neighbors of Foxwick. I even almost have my map done for the Kingdom of Foxwick and its neighbors!

Here are my October goals:
  • Finish my edit of Reborn. Seriously, I keep saying I'll work on it, but I haven't gotten beyond the prologue. I must finish the edit soon, so I can give my beta readers a month or two to read it and make comments.
  • Write Reforged. I would like to keep working on Reforged. Ideally, if I could finish this novel by the end of December, it would be great, although I'm tentatively shooting for November to finish it.
  • Outline Reigned. I want to write this as my NaNoWriMo novel in November in conjunction with Reforged, so I thought I'd finally put the outline in my head down on paper/Word document, then I'll be more prepared to write it.
  • Finish writing the last story in Neighbors of Foxwick. I have one scene in "Prince's Price" and seven scenes in "Love's Challenge" to write, and I'm really hoping to finish this before the end of September, but if not, then I'll be finishing it up in early October. If I can get this done, then I'll be on track to publish Neighbors of Foxwick by February 2014.
And that's all, folks! Not too bad, even though there is still a lot of writing and editing to be done.

Wednesday's Writing Update: September Stats and October Goals

Happy Wednesday!

First, I have some really cool news. Rayne Hall contacted me on Saturday. She is the editor of the Ten Tales themed anthologies, and she read Women of Foxwick and thought that "Lady Bard" would be a perfect addition to the forthcoming anthology Spells: Ten Tales of Magic. After making certain about rights and the like, I've agreed. I'm pretty excited about the exposure and the fact that it is the first time an editor contacted me about a story and not the other way around.

Oh, and I've been asked to be on a panel about blogging at the 2013 Roanoke Regional Writers Conference. It'll be my first time on a panel.

Okay, now for the general news. I have September's stats, and I'm pretty pleased with how productive I was last month.
Total Words Written: 24,825
Total Pages Edited: 628
And I published Gravity: The Complete Trilogy in print and ebook formats as well as re-published Once Upon a December Nightmare in ebook formats. I also finished the first draft of Nightmare Ever After, and it's with my critique partners and beta reader. I plan to start editing it for publication on October 15th. The only thing I've completely failed on is editing my YA Contemporary Romance novel Starred.

Here are October's goals:
1. Edit, proofread, and format Nightmare Ever After for publication by October 31st.
2. Read through The Phoenix Prophetess and make lots of notes on scenes, characters, etc. to get ready to rewrite it for NaNoWriMo.
3. Start formatting The Nightmare Collection, which will include "Nightmare at the Freak Show," Once Upon a December Nightmare, and Nightmare Ever After, for print and ebook with a release date hopefully in late November and start figuring out a blog tour for the first full week of December for The Nightmare Collection. Information about signing up to host me during the blog tour will come in next Wednesday's post.
4. Edit Act I of Starred.
5. Make an outline for The Loveless Princess, a YA Epic Fantasy novella set in the world of Foxwick. If time, begin writing the novella.

Also, if you'd like to add me as a writing buddy on NaNoWriMo, please do so. I'm bookworm0753 there.

Up until last weekend, I had planned to write Twelve Days of Foxwick for a December release. Day One of the stories twelve days went well, but it quickly fell apart from there. I figured I could push through or re-evaluate this novella. I've decided to stop for now and hopefully Twelve Days of Foxwick will be available November/December 2013. Instead, I'm working slowly on The Loveless Princess for a hopefully January/February 2013 release date.

So what are your October goals? How did September go for you?
