Wednesday's Writing Update: A winner, a new kitten, an award, and more!

Happy Wednesday!

A lot has gone on lately, so I hope I don't forget anything.

First things first, the winner of Rachelle Ayala's Michal's Window is:

Congrats, Christine! I'll contact you shortly to see what e-format you want Michal's Window in.

The Sunday before last, we went to my co-worker's sister's house and picked up my sister's new kitten. She's an adorable gray ball of fluff we named Juliette, or Jules, and is around six weeks old. I tried taking a good picture of her, but she's in that run-and-play stage.

Thank you to everyone who has downloaded a copy of A to Z Flashes of Foxwick at Amazon. My little flash fiction collection has kept great company, even being beside Tolkien's Lord of the Rings at one point.

I'm still editing, proofreading, and formatting Women of Foxwick. I hope to upload it on Amazon, Smashwords, and Nook on Friday to make certain it's ready for the release date of Tuesday, June 26th.

I've also started writing Pull of Gravity, the third and last book in the Gravity trilogy. I'm really enjoying writing it so far, and I believe it'll be longer than the first two (around 20,000 than 15,000 words).

Also, Medeia Sharif and Precy Larkins awarded me The Booker Award last week. Thank you, Medeia and Precy!

This award is for book bloggers only. To receive this award the blog must be at least 50% about books (reading or writing is okay).

Along with receiving this award, you must also share your top five favorite books you have ever read. (More than five is okay.) You must give this award to 5-10 other lucky book blogs you adore.

Here are my five favorite books (aka mainly series). I have more, but these are the first five that popped into my head.

1. Harry Potter series by JK Rowling
2. Across the Universe series by Beth Revis
3. Become by Ali Cross
4. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
5. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

Now, I'm supposed to award 5-10 bloggers for this award, but I'm so bad at choosing people, so if you tell me your favorite book in the comments, then you can have the award too.

Before I forget, I also updated my author website and my self-publishing company's website.

Well, I'm back to writing and editing. What have you been up to?

Wednesday's Writing Update: Catching Up

Happy Wednesday!

I'm slowly trying to catch up on things. Between the four-day weekend and the Flash Fiction Blogfest, I've fallen way behind in just about everything. So I hope you'll forgive me for being slower to comment and answer emails.

I also have jury duty in June, so I'm trying to get as many posts done with my summer blog schedule as possible for the month. Who knows? I might get on a murder trial and won't be able to be online for a while. I hope not in many ways, but you just never know.

My summer blog schedule is as follows:

Mondays
1st Monday - Book Chat
2nd Monday - Fantasy Chat
3rd Monday - Ask the Editor
4th Monday - Purrsonal Story

Wednesdays
Wednesday's Writing Update

Fridays
#fridayflash

Depending on how much I get done this summer, then that new blog schedule might last longer than August.

I've also decided to put A to Z Flashes of Foxwick on sale...as in free! But it can take a while for Amazon to change it from $0.99 to free. I could use your help. If you click here, it'll take you to Amazon's page for A to Z Flashes of Foxwick. Scroll down until you see "Product Details" and click on "tell us about a lower price." Then, enter in 0.00 for the price amount and this website: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/152339. Also, if you click that link, you can get it free on Smashwords too. The more people who tell Amazon about the lower price, then the more likely they'll change it before Women of Foxwick comes out. I hope to release that short story collection on June 19th, if all goes well. We'll call it a tentative release date.

So what are you up to this Wednesday?

Wednesday's Writing Update: Cover Art Reveal of WOMEN OF FOXWICK

Happy Wednesday!

I caught my sister's cold last week, so I've been rather slow and drained from it. In other words, nothing much has gotten done since then.

A to Z Flashes of Foxwick and Fighting Gravity have been accepted into Smashwords Premium Catalog, but it takes a while for stories to appear on there. I'll keep everyone updated. All three are now available on Nook, though, and A to Z Flashes of Foxwick and Fighting Gravity are on Kobo.

I've had a change in plans. Instead of working on Pull of Gravity in May, I'm planning to finish up Women of Foxwick. Here's the cover art for it. Aubrie Dionne made it for me. Isn't it pretty? Women of Foxwick is a short story collection featuring five women of Foxwick: Lyrica in "Lady Bard," Vesta in "Dragon Seer," Umbria in "Lady Death," Amelia in "Mage Game," and Zenia in "Magic Seeker." Since May has been so busy and I want to take more time with Pull of Gravity, I thought it would be best to finish up the last two stories in Women of Foxwick ("Lady Bard" and "Magic Seeker") first and get this collection out in June. Then I can write the longer Pull of Gravity and publish it around July.

You can add Women of Foxwick to your Goodreads list here.

Don't forget to enter the 2nd Annual Flash Fiction Blogfest here. It starts next Monday.

So what have you been working on?

Zenia's Zoo #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

Z

Zenia’s Zoo

Zenia knew something was missing from her menagerie.
A little dragon fluttered in his cage before gnawing on a sheep’s leg. The phoenix’s sweet song floated to Zenia’s ears, and she cuddled a baby unicorn and fed him a slice from her apple. A roc pecked at the ground and awaited a chance to fly. She had deer, a pet wolf, and horses. A tiny kitten wrapped around her legs, and Zenia tucked the kitten in her dress’s pocket.
She loved her animals. They listened to her gentle words and song. While her mother, Queen Amelia, had talents with plants, Zenia lived for her zoo.
But something was missing, and she didn’t know what to do.
“A present from the king, Princess Zenia.” The servant lugged a crate with holes into the barn.
“What is it?” Zenia clapped her hands and jumped up and down as the box opened to reveal a small gryphon with its swishing lion-like tail and brawny wings. The gryphon hissed like a cat, but Zenia giggled.
“Calm, sweet beast, and hear my song. You’ll never want for anything all day long.” Her sweet voice lilted into the air and calmed the gryphon. She wished she could do the same for the people in her Foxwick and surrounding lands so there would no longer be war and heartache.
But for now, a gryphon could be just what completed her menagerie.

Yonder Yew #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

Y

Yonder Yew

Yew Winters hated his name. When he asked his parents about its origins, they fondly told him his mother gave birth under a yew tree. He’d have rather been named Tree.
As soon as his sixteenth birthday, Yew ran away from his home in Wintermill and journeyed northwest until he met Merrilea Sea. Whoever knew sand could be so warm and the sun’s heat could toast his skin to a golden brown? On that beach, Yew abandoned his name and vowed to go only by his surname.
Winters breathed in the tangy, salty air. An undercurrent of rotting fish punctuated the air’s freshness, but he’d grown used to it. For the past forty-seven days he’d spent at sea. Far too long for a man to be away from land. When the ship pulled into the harbor, he nearly kissed the ground once he disembarked. Yes, he had been gone for too long.
“Ahoy!”
Winters pointed to himself. Who was this man calling him?
“Yes, you, yonder by the ship.”
Yew. Winters froze at that name, as if he’d fallen into Wintermill’s icy lake. His breath caught in his throat. “What did you call me?”
The man lifted his hands—palms toward Winters—and backed away. “I was just wondering if a young lad as yourself wanted to know where the tavern was. Do I know you?”
He bristled at the “Yew” again. “Listen here, stop calling me Yew.”
The man’s eyes crossed. “You? My name’s Pert.”
“Oh.” Winters realized his mistake between the word “you” and his former name as guilt gnawed on his innards. “Sorry, never mind.”
Kaleb, a fellow seaman, came up and clasped him on the shoulder. “So, your real name is Yew, is it? Like the tree?”
Should he cut him now or later? Winters glared at the two men. Damn Yew! “Shut up.”
Would he ever be rid of a name as dreadful as Yew?

Xavier's Xylophone #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

X

Xavier’s Xylophone

Xavier had crafted his xylophone from the finest rosewood located in Lochhollow. The instrument’s tone was unrivaled throughout the lands, so he wasn’t surprised when he received the summons to the castle to play his world-renowned xylophone.
The mule traveled sure-footed over paths into Foxwick, but Xavier cringed at every slight bump and jostle. His gaze flicked toward the wagon behind him. The xylophone rested amongst the hay like a baby snug in a crib. Why did Foxwick have to be quite so far away from Lochhollow? If anything happened to his instrument, he’d never forgive himself, or the king.
He rode all night and into the last part of the day until the stone towers loomed over him. He passed through the castle’s gates. No great reception greeted himself except for a lone knight.
“You’re the xylophonist, right?”
“Aye, I am. Xavier of Lochhollow at your service.” He removed his hat and nodded his head toward the man.
The knight clapped his hands, and four servants emerged on the wagon to transport his xylophone into the castle.
“Be careful with that. It’s a delicate instrument.” Xavier climbed from his perch, but he got no further than a step away from the wagon when the knight snatched his arm.
“Take the instrument to the prince’s chambers.” The man’s eyes narrowed, but Xavier could only imagine his fortune in staying in the prince’s own chambers. “You have an appointment with the king before we test your talents on this instrument.”
“Lead the way, good sir.” Xavier grinned. What kind of jewels would the king grant him for his talents? Would he sleep in a bed as lush as the prince’s must be? The excitement snatched him, and he swirled in its pleasurable embrace as he danced to his destiny.

Wayward Wintermill #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

W

Wayward Wintermill

Princess Eirwyn curtsied and tried not to cringe before her mother. “You called for me.”
Wintermill’s queen jumped from her throne and motioned for Eirwyn to follow. Eirwyn could barely keep up with her mother’s long stride as they entered the courtyard and traveled outside the palace.
In the distance, Eirwyn spied delicate smoke snaking from chimneys. Rumors floated to the palace staff that other kingdoms had their subjects live right against the castle. Eirwyn couldn’t imagine such a thing as she peered up at her ice-coated palace in the middle of the frozen lake.
Her toes curled in her fur boots, and she conjured a warm breeze to keep her face from freezing. Mother hadn’t said anything yet, and Eirwyn chewed on her lower lip. Something bad had happened, but what? She hadn’t heard any news.
“Mother?”
The queen spun around so quickly that Eirwyn nearly slipped on the ice. Instead of the slap she’d expected, her mother handed her a vial filled with pinkish-tinged liquid. “On your first night in Foxwick, pour this into Prince Javen’s goblet.”
Eirwyn’s fingers trembled as she took the vial. Who was this prince and what was her mother planning to do to him? “Foxwick? What does this vial do?”
“It’s a love potion. Foxwick will soon be a part of our kingdom.” Mother grabbed Eirwyn’s chin, and Eirwyn reluctantly met her gaze. “Don’t screw this up.”
Eirwyn slipped the vial into her cloak’s pocket. The love potion weighed her down, but she couldn’t let guilt stop her. Although she didn’t want to travel to Foxwick, she feared her mother’s wrath more. “As you wish.”

Valiant Valdale #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

V

Valiant Valdale

The lands near Valdale claimed they had the best healers, but the people of Valdale knew they did. Their king was a philosopher, and he designed fairness throughout the kingdom with his laws and rites.
Temples scattered in the towns and were more plentiful than taverns, although the locals knew the temple brothers had the best mead. The people were happy and lived ordinary lives, although their kingdom was small.
Valdale made up for its size when their neighbors called.
For Foxwick needed assistance when Wintermill’s frigidness drifted northward, and Valdale sent an army. They were always willing to shoulder the burdens of war to keep their own lands safe from harm.
No others were more valiant than those from Valdale.

Umbria and the Unicorn #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

U

Umbria and the Unicorn

Umbria slipped through Greymist Forest like a specter. As an assassin, she knew how to disguise herself from human and even creatures’ eyes, but she couldn’t hide from one animal.
The unicorn had been following her for a turn of the hourglass. She’d never had such a generally pure and innocent beast take an interest into her, but this one wasn’t a typical unicorn. He was a black stallion with a silver horn. She wouldn’t even have realized he pursued her, if it hadn’t been for the horn reflecting moonbeams.
As she passed underneath tree branches, she glanced behind her. The unicorn still continued toward her, and she’d had enough.
“Go away! Shoo.” She waved her arms, but the creature came until he was close enough to touch. “I don’t need you.”
The unicorn snorted his disagreement and pressed his muzzle against her outstretched hand. She’d never felt such soft fur. How could this animal want her company? She wasn’t a simple princess anymore. She wasn’t a simple assassin. Life and death pulsed from her hands, but the unicorn didn’t care.
So she let him follow her.

Tyre and Thay #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

This is also the only drabble (exactly 100 words) in the bunch.

T

Tyre and Thay

Tyre and Thay Goodmaker journeyed to Valdale with their worldly possessions worn and hung from their backs. The moon and stars witnessed their arrival. They passed in companionable silence as their footsteps tapped softly against the cobblestone pathways.
The temple doors opened to them, and the brothers entered and set their bags and lone weapon upon the entryway. They removed their shoes and bowed before their temple brother.
“You have returned.”
“Yes, we have,” the brothers said in unison.
“Welcome back.”
“Thank you.” Tyre and Thay, a swordsman and sorcerer respectively, shed their cloaks and returned to their monastery life.

Shades of the Shadowlands #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

S

Shades of the Shadowlands

Death used to be mortal, but he abandoned his mortality when he discovered the entrance to the Shadowlands. His spilled blood had opened the crevasse, and he could do nothing to stop his downward spiral into Death’s realm.
Bluish light, cold as ice, illuminated the Shadowlands. Stalactites dripped from the ceiling, and he had skirted around them. He’d planned to challenge the original Death and combat against him like heroes of old. His sword had gleamed in the pale light. Shapes formed slowly, like a near-sighted person squinting into the distance. Blacked shadows metamorphosed into many souls.
He’d recognized loved ones, friends, enemies. All resided in the Shadowlands in the end, and they had swarmed around his fading life.
But now these shades were in his keep. The years had passed, and his lands expanded to conform to these dearly departed souls. Death used to be a mortal man, but now he was so much more.

Raising Rocs #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

R

Raising Rocs

Sarya lugged the bucket of worms into the baby roc coop. The bucket plopped upon the hay-strewn floor, and a couple worms fell to their freedom. She scooped a handful of the wiggly creatures and turned toward the baby rocs.
They were the size of a medium-sized dog, even though the rocs were only a few weeks old. Instead of the gentle cheeps like a baby chick, these creatures screeched their hunger and hurt Sarya’s ears with their racket.
“Calm down. Breakfast is coming.” She dropped the fat worms into their awaiting mouths. These babies never seemed to get full of the treat. Why hadn’t papa let the mama rocs care for their own children? But she knew the answer. Full-grown rocs wouldn’t fit in the roc coop nor were they any use to her family when they were without flight. After all, her family was the best roc trainers in the Valdale kingdom.
She continued feeding them until the bucket was empty.
When she left the coop, she gulped the fresh air and tilted her face toward the morning sun.
“Sarya, you finished feeding the little ones?”
“Yes, papa.”
“Then, start cleaning out the coop and put the fresh hay down.”
“Yes, papa.” She stomped to the barn to get out the fresh bales of hay, a water bucket, and some brushes to clean the coop. This work was never done. Day in, day out. Always cleaning and feeding the monstrous birds.
Ugh, why couldn’t they raise sheep instead!

Quaylin's Quest #atozchallenge

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm featuring twenty-six flash fiction pieces from my Foxwick Kingdom and its surrounding neighbors. A to Z Flashes of Foxwick is now available from Smashwords and Amazon and includes the bonus short story "Lady Death." You can add this to your Goodreads list here.

Q

Quaylin’s Quest

“Are you going hunting again?” Quaylin sank upon a log beside Orin.
“Aye, I am.” Orin strung his bow and checked his quiver full of arrows.
“Want some company?”
“I’ll be all right. No need to come along this time.” He stood and patted Quaylin’s shoulder before heading off toward Greymist Forest.
For weeks, Quaylin had watched his brother delve further into his loneliness, and he’d had enough of it. If Orin wasn’t willing to find a wife, then Quaylin would find one for him.
Of course, he had his orders from his own wife to do so. Oh, she allowed his brother to live with them, but he could see how it wore on his wife’s nerves to have Orin underfoot. But where could he find the perfect woman for him?
He’d tried the taverns, but most of the women there weren’t the type you brought home as a wife. The marketplace’s women were generally already married or just not Orin’s type. Did his brother even have a type? Quaylin really didn’t know.
Petite, tall, pretty, plain. The various women’s faces swirled in Quaylin’s mind, but he still couldn’t locate the perfect bride for his brother after weeks of searching.
Yet, Quaylin had failed his quest and his brother. His shoulders drooped, and he bowed his head. If he sank any lower, then he would be kissing the ground. What was he going to do? How could he find someone to combat Orin’s solitary lifestyle?
With a heavy heart, he rose from the log and walked toward home. Not all quests could be fulfilled, despite his well-wishes toward his brother’s happiness.

P

Proud Phoenix

A phoenix’s song struck fear into the enemy’s heart. The fiery bird soared over the battlefield. King Brum had never seen a phoenix in flight like this, but certainly it was a fortuitous event.
An enemy arrow flung into the blue sky.
“Stop that archer!” King Brum’s commanding voice lifted through the clashing of swords and even rivaled the creature’s own melody.
The proud phoenix barely dodged the arrow. Some feathers drifted to the ground, and the bird dove toward the man who had tried to kill a phoenix. Within a few grains of sand, a screech rose and the man’s blood splattered before the phoenix disappeared in flames.
