Today's #fridayflash goes back to Raven in the short story "Eclipsed" and my "Lightning Flashed" flash fiction piece. The characters keep coming back to me and want to tell more of their stories, so perhaps in 2014 or so, I'll have a novel ready to write for them. And, for you Foxwick-enthusiasts out there, I'm setting it in Foxwick. *grins*
The
Light Burns
The magician-made sun scorched her
eyes behind her eyelids. The nineteen year old had spent weeks under its
luminosity. Raven Woodcroft craved the dark, but the Magician wouldn’t allow
it. The punishment for her “crime” of trying to stop him was too cruel. But
what else would she suspect from the man who had murdered her family years ago?
She shifted upon the cold hard
floor. Water dripped along the dungeon walls, and she reached out and touched
its dampness. She squeezed her eyelids tighter and buried her face against that
wall, but she could still see the light.
They used to call her the Eclipse.
She could seek out the light and steal it. Once she’d blocked the very sun from
the land. But the Magician was stronger than she.
Raven bit her knuckle to keep from
screaming. The lack of sleep and constant light drained her. Why wouldn’t he
let her die? Perhaps that was his cruelest trick of all.
A door clanked shut and footsteps
drew near. He was back. But she wouldn’t beg. No. He wouldn’t break her—although
she was probably already broken beyond repair. He would pay, and one day she
vowed to let the lands know of his evil. This man killed her family. He
systematically destroyed the Wizard, the Witch, and the Sorceress.
But he would not add her to his list
of death. One day, one way or the other, she would break free.

Wouldn't it be horrible if light did that to you?
What a neat idea to place your Raven characters in yur foxwick setting! Great piece Cherie. Have a good weekend =)
constant light- that would suck, I'm a night person myself. great story, thanks for sharing.
I have trouble sleeping if there's a light in my eyes, so I know what it must be like. I like how you crafted this, her thirst for revenge only fueled by the cruelity.
As usual, this is fantastic! I use the same setting in a lot of my stories. It keeps everyone connected, you know? :)
Love it! I hope she gets her revenge. Intense little piece.
A long, LONG time ago, I role-played a Sailor Moon character named Eclipse. I always wondered why Sailor Moon was the most powerful!
If our world orbited a sun in a globular cluster, we would probably never know night.
I like the dark. It would stink to lose it.
Never being in the dark would be horrible--much as darkness can be hard to deal with, it's so essential.
Great flash fiction!
Really enjoying this character and her determination, great flash
I like her fighting spirit. Great piece.
One day soon, I think that magician is going to get his come-uppance! Nicely done.
