Fantasy Tuesdays: First Fantasy Book Read

Going off of yesterday's Book Chat, I've been thinking about the first fantasy book I've read. I'm sure there were earlier ones, but my mind is drawing a blank. Most of the books I've read as a child were mysteries. I loved Nancy Drew, The Cat Who books, and more. I read Stephen King and Michael Crichton. Some comes close to fantasy (and I loved Disney movies...Beauty and the Beast is still my favorite), but pure fantasy? Blank, blank, blank!

Until these books by Mercedes Lackey: Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, and Magic's Price. My friend told me about them, and I was hooked. I read almost every book the library had at the time by Mercedes Lackey, and I went on from there. There is so much great fantasy out there now. A lot of great fantasy from the past too (still don't know how I missed it).

What was the first fantasy book you remember reading?

Terry Brooks was the first fantasy author I ever read, along with Piers Anthony and Tolkien.

Scions of Shannara by Terry Brooks is the first fantasy I can remember reading. I'm pretty sure that's not actually the first one I read, but it's the first one I can remember.

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Loved it but it took me years to read the rest of the series.

Hi Cherie, found you through the campaign. The first fantasy book I remember reading is A Wrinkle in Time. Great book, enjoyed your blog and look forward to reading more. Happy Writing.

The first fantasy book I read is Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree. You can count that as sort of urban fantasy, right?! I read mostly horror when I was younger. There's Stephen King and Peter Straub's The Talisman. That was fantasy, and I started getting into Clive Barker. Weaveworld is one of the most unique dark fantasy books out there.

Loved CS Lewis when I was really young - A teacher read my class The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, and I still remember being able to picture the vivid images in my mind. I didn't finish the series until high school, but I still love it. I also remember having a great love for The Belgariad series by David Eddings...not enough to continue to the next thirty five series he did (I think I burned myself out by reading the first arc so fast), but I still have a deep appreciation and fond memory of those books.

I like Mercedes Lackey. She's one of the few authors with the courage to make characters gay. In other worlds, gay people simply don't exist or are villains and scummy people to be despised (Here's lookin' at you Orson Scott Card).

The first fantasy book that I can remember reading is Tolkien and I read both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. And then I didn't read anymore for a long time until I discovered Anne McCaffrey and her Dragonriders of Pern series.

Honestly, JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings was my first fantasy and I haven't looked back since.
