Flash Fiction Fridays

Stage Daydreams

In ballet slipper feet, I stepped upon the Majestic Theater's stage. Bouncing on my toes, I pirouetted in a slow circle. An off-white sheet covered the giant chandelier, and I knew when the show began, it would rise up above the awed audience.

I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera when I was seven, and it defied belief I stood here now on this stage. My first performance was precisely an hour and forty-four minutes away.

Despite my dreams of performing Christine DaaƩ's role, I was only a chorus girl. I would settle for Meg, though.

Spinning around, hundreds of seats flew by, and I stopped. My skirt whirled around my ankles. I closed my eyes and sang a few lines of "Think of Me."

He clapped and emerged from the shadows. "Bravo, Violet. Well done."

I held my breath. "Hello, Erik. I didn't think anyone was here yet." The Phantom was talking to me!

Erik stepped behind me.

I could feel warmth radiating from him, and I blushed. When he touched my cheek, I felt I could die. My heart skipped a beat and then sped up rapidly.

"You should be Christine," he whispered in my ear.

I sighed. "Yes." Then, I opened my eyes and found I was still alone.

"Maybe someday." I twirled again, clearing my mind of foolish dreams of finding a phantom of wealthy patron to whisk me off my feet.

That's the thing about performing The Phantom of the Opera, I suppose, he truly does get inside my mind.

Oh I love the Phantom of the Opera!

Did I ever tell you how hubby proposed? Not sure I have so we dated through college but mostly we just hung out. We didn't have a lot of money so we made a point to go out at least once a month on our monthly anniversary. So one month, Todd made reservations at a restaurant for us. He was driving and the weatherman had called for rain that day. It was cloudy out, not dark, threatening clouds, but we were wearing nice clothes so he pulled the car over to get an umbrella out of the trunk just in case. And walked around to my door and opened it, wearing a Phantom mask and cloak. He had purposely pulled us over at a park and took me beneath some trees and sang two songs from the movie before getting down on one knee. It was so incredibly romantic! It more than made up for him first asking me out over AIM and saying "I love you" for the first time on the phone. :D

*grins* I love the Phantom of the Opera too!

And, that is so sweet! I would have said yes, too...if he was a good singer. *laughs*

It used to be my dream of performing the role of Christine Daae, and I used to roleplay phantom of the opera. I have a bunch of phantom swag from when I was obsessed with it. *sighs* Those were some good times.

He is a good singer. I convinced him to do chorale with me in college for a year.

I love the movie. Know the lyrics to all the songs, sing along all the time. Would have loved to have been a performer, I love to sing, but I never auditioned for anything. Maybe someday.

The other play I'm obsessed with is Les Miserables. *sigh* But I would rather the part of Eponine than Cosette.

That's good he's a good singer.

The movie was good, but what got me hooked on Phantom was seeing it on Broadway. It changes your life. If a community theater around here ever performs Phantom and I find out when auditions are, then I'm auditioning. I used to perform a lot in musical theater, but I haven't much any more. No time. I'd make time for Phantom, though.

Les Miserables is wonderful! I like Eponine better than Cosette too!

I'd also like to see Wicked. I've read the book, and it was so good.

We haven't had the chance to see the Phantom yet but we definitely plan on it. I would audition for either play if a local theater performed one. I would just be thrilled to be in the chorus! *sigh* I miss singing.

I've heard so much about Wicked but I don't know anything about it.

Yeah, I'd take the chorus, too, but they better put me in the back. My dancing skills are zero. *laughs* I miss singing sometimes. There really is nothing like it.

I haven't seen the musical, but I love the song "Defying Gravity" from Wicked. The book was fantastic, though. It's an alternative look at the Wizard of Oz books. I've read the first two, but I still need to read A Lion Among Men.
