Fantasy Chat: Magna's Plea and W4WS

Today's the official release date of Magna's Plea, my YA Epic Fantasy prequel short story from The Fate Challenges series.

A princess will rise and challenge Fate.

While her father, brothers, and people fight against the Kingdom of Apentha, tenacious eighteen-year-old Princess Magna can only watch the destruction of Amora, her besieged city and kingdom. Her mother, Queen Vyvian, has refused to allow her heir to join the fray.

But Magna won't take no for an answer. She seeks out an end of the war from Prince Cyrun of Apentha, their prisoner. If she can't persuade him toward peace, then Amora may fall.

This short story prequel includes a sneak peek of Reborn, Book One of The Fate Challenges, forthcoming May 2014.

An excerpt from Magna's Plea

Amora
12-13 Days of Luquiry
Year 1717 AUC

Tendrils of smoke swirled heavenward. The smoldering stench reached Princess Magna at the top of the palace’s northern tower. She wrinkled her nose at the unpleasant odor, yet it still smelled better than the filth plaguing the besieged seven-hilled city.

She’d vowed to protect Amora. Her heart shattered a little more each day at the devastation afflicting her kingdom.

The once grassy and flower-filled plain sprouted dust plumes from the trampling feet. As the sun neared the western horizon, a bloody hue washed over the battlefield. Tiny, metallic dins and men’s shouts rang out. Magical bursts flashed in the sky like Thean’s lightning, beautiful and deadly. A wooden catapult hurled a human-sized stone slab into the city’s wall. Magna jerked away from the opened window she stood before, as if the object had struck her instead. Rock crumbled from the impact, but the barrier held.

When the reddish orb sank lower, the fighting ceased. War’s chaos parted into two orderly sides, and soldiers crossed the field to gather their dead.

She brushed a shaky hand over her cheeks. Tears dampened her face, and she struggled to turn away from the battle before her. Almost two months had passed since the Apenthans had begun their attack Amora. How much longer could the Amorans—she—stay safe behind their impenetrable wall?

A special thanks to all who've signed up to help spread the word about Magna's Plea this week.

And join me tomorrow (October 22) on Untethered Realms as I talk about what's in store for the Kingdom of Amora.

The third Monday of each month, we will spotlight one, two, or possibly three new authors. Then, the good people of Blogdom will promote the author’s book to their Twitter followers or Facebook friends, and thus to incredibly large new audiences the author could not reach on their own.

Since Halloween is coming up, I'd like to promote The Nightmare Collection. Through Halloween, the collection is only $0.99. Feel free to snag the promo picture I've created about the sale.

Fantasy Chat: World Building with T.F. Walsh and W4WS

For today's Fantasy Chat, we have the talented T.F. Walsh here talking about world building.

Hi Cherie, thanks for having me on your blog. Today I want to chat about world building.

What I love about writing fantasy is the ability to create things out of nothing. The trick is to make it appear believable by borrowing items from history and even today’s world.

In Cloaked in Fur, the story is set in Brasov, Romania in the Carpathian Mountains. It’s a real place. It exists. My friend actually grew up in Brasov. But where the reality ends and fantasy begins is with the introduction of werewolves in this setting. And why not? It’s a place seeped in folklore, and many tales associated with Dracula come from this location. The backdrop is perfect.

And to take the world building further, I created three types of werewolves with a bloodline that links back to the royal kings from the Kingdom of Hungary in the 1300s. My plan was to differentiate each werewolf kind with names that weren’t too complicated, but almost self-explanatory. So, a moonwulf is a half wolf, half human. The moon still controls them once a month. Outside the full moon, they can’t transform. Now, for those creatures who have complete control over their transformations, I’ve named them wulfkin. And lastly, the monstrous, bloodthirsty werewolves who have zero ability to hold back their appetite are called dracwulf.

Of course with any wolf pack, rules and hierarchy plays a huge part. And the rules I introduced are crucial to the story and Daciana’s undoing. Plus, they set things in motion for book 2, which I’m very excited about.

The fun part about world building in fantasy worlds is that anything new introduced will have a ripple effect on everything else. And that’s where it gets fun, allowing you to take the story in so many directions.

What do you love about world building in a story?

Cloaked in Fur is Available Now
As a moonwulf, Daciana never expected to fall in love with a human. Hell, she never imagined that she’d abandon her pack, endanger everyone around her, and break the worst rule possible. But she did.

A rogue werewolf is killing Daciana’s friends, and she sets on capturing the creature.  She’ll do whatever it takes to stop the beast. The police and her boyfriend, Inspector Connell Lonescu, are starting to question her involvement in the murders, which is endangering the pack’s secret existence. But when the pack alpha kidnaps Connell, revealing the awful truth about the creature and its connection to the pack, Daciana must choose between saving the man she loves and saving her pack family from certain death.

Growing up hearing dark fairytales, she's always had a passion for reading and writing horror, paranormal romance, urban fantasy and young adult stories. She balances all the dark with light fluffy stuff like baking and traveling.
