#IWSG: The Pros and Cons of Writing Every Day | A Cover Reveal of Misha Gerrick's Endless

IWSG was created by the Captain Ninja Alex J. Cavanaugh. Click here to visit the other IWSG participants. The co-hosts are Megan Morgan, Christopher D. Votey, Viola Fury, Christine Rains, Madeline Mora-Summonte, L.G. Keltner, Patricia Lynne, and Rachna Chhabria.
"Write every day" is common advice given to writers.

When I first started writing, I wrote most days, but I was only writing in other people's worlds via online roleplaying games and fan fiction. That dedication to writing most days changed when I started writing for publication. I wrote in spurts. Some months I would write 20,000+ words. Others, I was lucky to get in 2,000 words. On July 1, 2015, I decided to spend a number of minutes a day on writing.

Now I don't believe you have to write every day. It's what is working for me now, but that doesn't mean I won't skip a day or more in the future. Like all advice, writing every day has its pros and cons.

Three pros are consistent writing, easier to remember where you left off in a manuscript, and completing works in a timely manner.

Two cons are you never get a day off and the necessity of having a new project ready to go when you finish an old one. That last con is my big insecurity for the day. I'm a few weeks away from starting a new novel, A Soul to Reap (Soul Reaper #1). In three or four months, I will start a new series, To the Future (YA Urban Fantasy). I've been panicking the last few weeks and wondering how in the world will I be ready to write these new books.

What is your insecurity this month?

If you haven't guessed by now, I'm a big overachiever. I finished last month's goals. Two months in a row! On March 14, I completed the first draft of A Soul to Kill (Soul Reaper #0). The first draft came in at 40,905 words. Of course, two days after I finished it, I've been wondering if the story should have been told in first person point of view instead of third. If so, then I have a big rewrite to do in April/May. *sighs* Destined (The Fate Challenges #3) continues to progress, and I've completed 17 chapters out of 41. I finished edits on "Folds in Life and Death" and the bonus woodwose section, which I  plan to make available for free on my website in the coming months. I also outlined "A Soul to Protect" and have been writing it since March 15 and am on scene two out of five. I've made some progress with marketing, but we'll see how it goes the next few months.

My goals for April are:
  • Write for 30 minutes a day in Destined.
  • Write for 15 minutes a day in "A Soul to Protect." When I finish this short story, I'll start writing A Soul to Reap.
  • Outline A Soul to Reap.
  • Edit Marked based off my first critique partner's notes.
  • Start rewriting/editing A Soul to Kill.
What are your goals for April?

Current 2016 Stats: 90,027 words written and 705 pages edited

I'm over at the Parallels' blog today for the A-Z Challenge: Emotions. I have an excerpt from "Folds in Life and Death."

First, do no harm.” Blake Ryan swore that oath to become a doctor. Ironic, given that he spent most of his thousand year life sucking souls out of other immortals.

Things are different now. Using regular shots of morphine to keep his inner monster at bay, Ryan has led a quiet life since the Second World War. His thrills now come from saving lives, not taking them.

Until a plane crash brings Aleria into his hospital. Her life is vibrant. Crack to predators like him. She’s the exact sort of person they would hunt, and thanks to a severe case of amnesia, she’s all but defenseless.

Leaving Aleria vulnerable isn’t an option, but protecting her means unleashing his own inner monster. Which is a problem, because his inner monster wants her dead most of all.

Writing Update: September Goals / Cover Reveal of Kitsy Clare's Private Internship

Happy Wednesday!

Although the month started our rocky, I have made some progress in my goals and I've decided to take my own advice of one day at a time a step further to one thing at a time. So I'm working on what needs to be finished first or what I hope to get accomplished first. I finally finished my outline for Reforged, which I have to say will be awesome if I can do the story justice, I wrote a new contemporary fantasy short story titled "Paper Lanterns," and I've been proofreading Twisted Earths, the upcoming Untethered Realms anthology. Twisted Earths will be up for pre-order soon with an official release date of October 14th.

Here are my goals for September:
  • Finish editing and proofreading People of Foxwick and Their Neighbors. Once this is completed, I can contact my cover artist to finalize the print cover, so I can obtain my print proof, do my print proof proofread, and publish this 80,000-word short story collection.
  • Write in Remarked. Since I'll mainly be working on People of Foxwick during the work week, I plan to take weekends to work on Remarked.
What are your September goals?

M.J. Fifield's debut novel Effigy is coming out next month, and I'm participating in her cover reveal. Isn't it a gorgeous cover?

The survival of a once-mighty kingdom rests in the hands of its young queen, Haleine CoileĆ”in, as it slowly succumbs to an ancient evil fueled by her husband’s cruelty.

A sadistic man with a talent for torture and a taste for murder, he is determined to burn the land and all souls within. Haleine is determined to save her kingdom and, after a chance encounter, joins forces with the leader of the people’s rebellion. She gives him her support, soon followed by her heart.

Loving him is inadvertent but becomes as natural and necessary as breathing. She lies and steals on his behalf, doing anything she can to further their cause. She compromises beliefs held all her life, for what life will exist if evil prevails?

Her journey leads to a deceiving world of magic, monsters, and gods she never believed existed outside of myth. The deeper she goes, the more her soul is stripped away, but she continues on, desperate to see her quest complete. If she can bring her husband to ruin and save her people, any sacrifice is worth the price—even if it means her life.

Wow! It's hard to believe a month ago Reborn officially debuted and the blog tour started. Here is where I'm at today:

Today's Reborn tidbit: The Prophecy of Sólfœra comes from the Norvadians (Great Beyonders) and was one of the last world-building aspects I added to Reborn during the final edit and has taken a life of its own. Cover Reveal: Reborn, My Debut Novel

Today I'm very excited to share with you the cover art of my debut novel Reborn, Book One of The Fate Challenges.

Ebook Cover

To save a kingdom, a prophetess must challenge Fate.

On the day of Yssa’s death and rebirth, the god Apenth chose her as the Phoenix Prophetess.

Sea serpents and gods endanger the young prophetess’s journey and sour the omens. Yssa is cursed instead of blessed, and her duties at the Temple of Apenth prove it. She spends her days reading dusty scrolls, which does nothing to help her forget Tym, the boy back home. But the annoying yet gorgeous ferryman’s son Liam proves to be a distraction she can’t predict, even though he rarely leaves her alone for two sand grains.

Her boring temple life screeches to a halt when visions of her parents’ murders consume her. Yssa races across an ocean to stop the future. If she can’t change Fate, she’ll refuse to be the Phoenix Prophetess any longer. Fate, however, has other plans for her and the kingdom.

Yssa must either accept her destiny or fight to change Fate.

The Indelibles

The Indelibles will be hosting a monthly feature called INDIE LIFE. Modeled after Alex Cavanaugh's awesome Insecure Writer's Group, this will be a chance for indie authors to post about indie life, find each other, offer support, encouragement, news, helpful hints, and anything else that makes life as an indie author a little easier.

What is Indie Life? How: Sign up on the Linky at the bottom of this page here. When: Post on the second Wednesday of the month. What: Write anything indie related: something that will inspire or help a fellow indie; something that celebrates a release or a milestone; something that talks about the ups and downs, joys and heartaches of Being Indie. Grab: The banner above to include in your posts!

Just a short Indie Life post today, since I'm busy writing, writing, and writing some more for NaNoWriMo.

Publishers can be great and all, but like all things they have their pros and cons. I know me, though. From school, I've always been more an individual person and didn't really trust a group to do my own work. I hated group projects. And although we're not alone even when we self-publish our work, I love having the final say over my product.

What do you love about being an Indie?

IWSG: Horror Writing Workshop and Cover Reveal of Jay Noel's Dragonfly Warrior

It's the first Wednesday of the month, so you know what that means ... it's time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group meeting. IWSG was created by the awesome ninja captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, and you can find out the other members of the group here.

Happy Wednesday!

On October 23, I drove up to Charlottesville, VA with my mom to give a presentation on writing horror to the Blue Ridge Writers. It was my very first time giving a workshop completely by myself. I'd been on panels before, but that's much different. I think the workshop went fairly well, although there were some problems too.

As for what I talked about, I started off mentioning fear and the unknown, transitioned to what drew me to writing horror, talked about horror subgenres and then the elements of writing horror, and lastly, I mentioned about publishing horror.

Here's what went well:
  • People laughed at my jokes. Humor and horror isn't easy, but I got laughs in all the right places.
  • For the most part, the audience seemed engaged in what I was saying.
  • I know I inspired at least one person to try her hand at writing horror.
  • I had good questions after the presentation, even though I didn't always know how to answer said questions.
  • I sold five books and gave out some bookmarks afterwards.
  • I was told by a writing teacher that I had excellent transitions to my speech.
  • The idea of a half-day horror writing workshop where we'd work on writing horror was thrown out there, so I must've made a fairly good impression.
Here's what could've been better:
  • Directions. Yes, I got lost. Several times. Charlottesville is a confusing city. Next time I would need to study the maps more.
  • My Kindle became possessed. I wrote out my speech and put it on my Kindle. For some reason, when I would turn a page here and there, it wouldn't have the next line. I would have to skip forward 2-3 pages and then go back to find my place. This ate up time and created awkward pauses, since I hadn't had the time to be as prepared as I wanted to be. Of course, when I got home, everything was there as planned.
  • A few places I noticed I was losing the audience because I guess what I was saying was a bit boring or not as exciting as other parts.
What would I do differently:
  • Prepare more and try to memorize what I want to say. I would've done this, but September and the first part of October were crazy. By the time I got time to work on my workshop, I didn't have the time to memorize what I wanted to say, so I had to rely heavily on my notes. Next time, I will be better prepared.
  • Cut out the boring parts. Try to make each little bit more engaging. I also need to make it even more my own voice. Since I was running out of time, some of the speech was a cut and paste from my notes.
  • Create goodie bags to hand out from the start with my business card, bookmarks, and maybe some candy. After the Q and A section was over, most people left before I could hand out any of those items.
  • Know where I'm going. Yes, I got lost and was late getting there, but next time I'm traveling to an unfamiliar place I'm going to leave earlier and study the maps around the area, so I am better prepared on where I'm going.
I would definitely do another workshop if asked. It's a fantastic opportunity. Also, I had created a handout to go along with my workshop, so if anyone is interested in looking at it, let me know and I'll email it to you.

Do you like attending writer workshops/presentations? Have you ever given one?

Yolanda Renee over at Defending the Pen interviewed me on Friday about Magna's Plea, Reborn, and what I wanted to be before I became a writer. You can read the interview here.

NaNoWriMo is going well. I'm over 13,000 words in five days, and I'm enjoying writing Reforged and Reigned. If you're curious about Reigned, you can read the first chapter here. I've also finished through Chapter 9 of 38 in Reborn edits. And because I'm editing and writing a lot this month, it has to come first, so I'll be a bit slow in responding to emails and commenting on blog posts.

And today, I'm posting the fantastic cover reveal of Jay Noel's novel Dragonfly Warrior.

The Mechanica Wars: Savage Machines Are Afoot...

At the age of twenty, Kanze Zenjiro's bloody footprints mark the bodies of those who stood in his way to protect the throne of Nihon. Now, the tyrannical Iberian Empire is bent on destroying his kingdom, and they send their steam-powered giants and iron spiders against him.

Zen embarks on a quest that takes him on the most dangerous journey of his life. To succeed, Zen must live up to his nickname, the Dragonfly Warrior, and kill all his enemies with only a sword and a pair of six-guns. He is called upon to somehow survive a test of faith and loyalty in a world so cruel and merciless, it borders on madness.

Dragonfly Warrior is a steampunk adventure like no other. It's a dynamic mix of Asian and European mythology, the Wild West, martial arts, traditional fantasy, and high powered steam action that will keep you turning the pages.

Dragonfly Warrior is the first book of The Mechanica Wars, and will debut on January 6, 2014.

About the Author: After doing some freelance writing and editing for more than a dozen years, Jay decided to stop procrastinating and pursue his dream of being a novelist. He's been blogging for over eight years, and even had a comedy podcast syndicated all over the internet. All of that was fun, but all the steampunk-inspired stories in his head just wouldn't leave him alone. Jay spends his days working in medical sales, but he can be found toiling over his laptop late at night when all is quiet.

He draws inspiration from all over: H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Shakespeare, Ray Bradbury, Douglas Adams, and Isaac Asimov.

And Jay loves cookies.

IWSG: Nicole Zoltack and Insecurity, A Little Help, and Cover Reveal of Crystal Collier's Moonless

It's the first Wednesday of the month, so you know what that means ... it's time for another Insecure Writer's Support Group meeting. IWSG was created by the awesome ninja captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, and you can find out the other members of the group here.

Today I have a special post from Nicole Zoltack. Her newest release Black Hellebore will be released on October 21st.

Thank you, Cherie, for having me today! I really appreciate it.

With every release date, an author melts into a puddle of nerves and insecurity. Myself included. For months now, I was counting down the days until Black Hellebore released on October 1st. As the date neared, I grew even more nervous because my cover wasn’t finished. And it still isn’t so needless to say, Black Hellebore isn’t released yet. It's new release date is October 21st. A setback, but hopefully it won’t cost me sales since I told everyone and their brother and mother and sister it was releasing on the first. All I can do is wait and hold my breath. I’m sure the cover will be well worth the wait.

Have you ever had to push back a release? What kind of a cover would you envision for a superhero romance?

I'm sure the cover will be well worth the wait, Nicole!

About Black Hellebore: Once a year for the past decade, Nicholas Adams returns to Falledge and leaves a black hellebore on his girlfriend's grave. While departing Falledge, he chases after a man sneaking into the laboratory and dies for his trouble. A witch brings him back to life, but Nicholas soon realizes he's not the same man. Turns out, magic combined with a black hellebore in his pocket changed him into a kind of a super man.

His girlfriend's twin, Julianna Paige, is Falledge's deputy, struggling to solve several murders. Nicholas, and his alter ego the Black Hellebore, helps her, even as she helps him move on and even start to love again.

Unfortunately, Nicholas wasn't the only one changed in the laboratory explosion, and now there's a supervillain bent on destroying Falledge, and killing the Black Hellebore. But falling in love might prove more dangerous than any supervillain.

About the Author: Nicole Zoltack loves to write fantasy/paranormal, romances, horror, historical, for adults and young adults, novels, short stories, and flash pieces. She doesn't want to get boxed in by genre -- she might be claustrophobic! She's also an editor for MuseItUp Publishing and works as a freelance editor.

When she isn't writing about girls wanting to be knights, talking unicorns, and zombies, she spends time with her loving family. She loves to ride horses (pretending they're unicorns, of course!) and going to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, dressed in period garb. Her favorite current TV show is The Walking Dead.

To learn more about Nicole and her work, visit her website at www.NicoleZoltack.com or her blog at http://NicoleZoltack.blogspot.com.

Happy Wednesday!

I could use a little price-matching help, if you have a moment. I'd like to make Magna's Plea, a YA Epic Fantasy short story, free on Amazon/Amazon UK. It's already free on Smashwords, Nook, Kobo, iTunes, Wattpad, and Goodreads.

All you need to do is go to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F45NMJW and/or Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00F45NMJW. Find where it says, "tell us about a lower price" and click on it. [By the way, if you go to the page, and it says $0.00 for the price, then it means Amazon finally price-matched.]

Then, you need to click on "Website (Online)."

You fill in the information: url link, price 0.00, shipping and handling 0.00, and click "Submit feedback."

You can use these links for the URL where Magna's Plea is free.

I'm hoping Amazon makes the story free by the time Magna's Plea officially releases on October 21st.

Thank you!! And I apologize for not visiting blogs as much lately. I've been so very busy lately that all my time at work has been on other tasks. I'm hoping to catch up a bit by the end of work Thursday, or early next week at the latest.

Today, I'm also participating in the cover reveal for Crystal Collier's Moonless.

Alexia’s nightmares become reality: a dead baron, red-eyed wraiths, and forbidden love with a man hunted by these creatures. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with her beloved and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

MOONLESS is Jane Eyre meets Supernatural.

Crystal, author of MOONLESS, is a former composer/writer for Black Diamond Productions. She can be found practicing her brother-induced ninja skills while teaching children or madly typing about fantastic and impossible creatures. She has lived from coast to coast and now calls Florida home with her creative husband, three littles, and “friend” (a.k.a. the zombie locked in her closet). Secretly, she dreams of world domination and a bottomless supply of cheese. Blog | Twitter | Goodreads | Facebook | Website
