Promo and Excerpt from MAKE OLD BONES by Leslie S. Talley

Leslie S. Talley's novel Make Old Bones came out last week, and today, I have a small excerpt to share with you.

Excerpt from Make Old Bones

What would the children think if they saw her? She thought of the others that way: children. Why did she still bother with them? Not much longer, she thought. An idea sprouted in her brain. Why not scare them? Hide. Don’t come out. Let them think some Bogeyman found her. She knew just the spot, too. She found it the previous week, the same trip that secured for her the piece of map. She came to the house by herself – well, actually to meet someone. Someone who didn’t show up. But he would. Oh, yes! And that other she’d seen – Connie hugged herself as she thought of the power.

Stubbing out the cigarette in the stone urn on the post, Connie groped her way to the kitchen at the rear of the house. Gleefully, she opened the door of one of the pantries. She ran her hand along the wall until she found the knob. She remembered that it looked just like one of the other cabinets. She wedged herself inside the tiny space: a miniature elevator. Perfect. They’d never look for her here. Best of all, she needn’t go near the third floor.

The jolt jarred her, tipping her over so that her head rested on the doorframe. A hollow noise reverberated down the shaft. Slowly her crawlspace moved…upward.

Fifteen-year-old Connie Kittredge disappears in 1953, presumed drowned, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Almost forty years later, her skeleton is discovered in the disused dumbwaiter of historic Belgrath House, situated on an island in the tidal Halifax River. The discovery coincides with the thirty-five year reunion of Connie's Class of '57.
Clarice and Otis Campion function as caretakers of Belgrath, newly restored and opened as a B & B. Clarice, along with their permanent guest Miss Letty, ninety-year-old star of the silent screen, decides to investigate the mystery. Could the murderer be one of Connie's classmates, now respectable citizens? A rejected boy friend? A jealous girl? Connie, a sneaky child, loved the power of finding out secrets; perhaps she found one just too dangerous for her to live.
At a wake for Connie held at Belgrath House, someone collapses from iced tea laced with cherry laurel, proving that the murderer is still around - and dangerous. Complications cloud the picture in the form of suspicious bed and breakfasters, restoration society members, University of Florida freshmen...and a certain pelican. Clarice and Miss Letty re-double their efforts at sleuthing. The death of Connie Kittredge is tied directly to the history of the house, they learn. The house will ultimately reveal its secrets, but not before exposing Clarice to danger.
Inadvertently left behind during a forced evacuation due to Category Four Hurricane Aphrodite, Clarice finds herself confronting a killer - and a rising tidal surge.

Wednesday's Writing Update: Writing, Editing, and an eBook sale!

I was so busy with my cat being ill that I have little to add on the writing front this week. Romeo is doing well. He's eating his new food and has become active again. He's even getting better at taking his pills. He's such a sweetheart. I'll drop by the vet today to pick up more special food for him, and he goes back for a check-up on Friday, June 3rd.

I wrote the second part of "The Luck I've Had" on Raven and the Writing Desk. You can read Lisa Rusczyk's part one here

I took the plunge and joined LinkedIn on Monday. Here is my profile.

As for writing, I've done very little. I still hope to write a short story for Wicked EastPress's Greek Myths Revisited. The deadline is May 31st, so I better get writing, if I want to make the deadline.

I finished editing the hard copy of the first five chapters of Virtuoso and added the changes to the word document, which is "new draft two." They are now with my critique partners. Once I get it back from them, I'll make the "new draft three" file. I hope to edit chapters six-ten soon and rewrite chapters eleven-fifteen within the next couple weeks. My goal is still to query agents in October.

I have several editing projects I'm working on. I'm glad I have a three-day weekend coming up!

By the way, Wild Child Publishing is having a Memorial Day sale on Monday, May 30th. Use the code "we remember" and get 30% off any $10 eBook purchase. There are so many good books on there, so please check out the website, make your book list, and see about buying some books on Memorial Day.

Does anyone else have writing news? Or weekend plans?

It's just a few days before Christmas. Have you completed your shopping? Do you know anyone with an eReader or who is getting one for Christmas? If you need another gift or just enjoy books, then this sale is for you. My publisher Wild Child Publishing and their sister site Freya's Bower are currently having an ebook sale until the end of the year. Buy $8 or more of ebooks, type in the coupon code "Happy Holidays," and you'll get 25% off your purchase.

A few great books you should consider buying are:
Once Upon a December Nightmare by Cherie Reich (Yes, I had to put my own ebook. What are you waiting for? The true tale happened on December 29, 2002, so it's a great time to read it during December.)

And many, many more!

There are quite a few books I can't wait to purchase. :D

Release Day: ONCE UPON A DECEMBER NIGHTMARE

Today is the release day for my ebook Once Upon a December Nightmare! You can now purchase your copy for $2.99 here.

Blurb:
They were only going out to dinner and a movie.

But when their plans go astray, friends Cassie, Mary, Denise, and James decide to take a detour down a lonely mountain road. A felled tree blocks their passage and forces them to turn around in a clearing containing a disturbing arrangement of four deer carcasses.

Their truck breaks down, their cell phones don't work, and they must brave the cold December air, nightfall, and a long hike. Yet this is the least of their troubles. Tension runs high between the four young friends…and they are not alone. Each step brings them closer to safety, but will they make it to the main road alive?

Excerpt:
“I think we should stay together,” Cassie spoke up. “The lights went out. The cell phones don’t work. We’re stuck in the middle of freaking nowhere. This has all the makings of a horror movie, and I know something about horror movies. You never split up.”

“I don’t want to stay here,” Mary squeaked. She trembled, looking cold and scared.

“What if someone comes up here after we leave? Then we’ll miss out on a ride back,” Denise said and wrapped an arm around her sister. “Mary, we’ll be fine if we stay here. It’s safe in the truck.” She didn’t think she could walk three or four miles to the main road. Despite being twenty-years-old, she was more than forty pounds overweight and always a little out of breath from smoking.

“No one will be coming up here.” Cassie laughed, although the sound held no mirth. “James said that the forestry service checks this road once a week. It could be several days before they check the road again. The road behind us is blocked, and very few people will come out here during the winter season, as well,” she argued. “I’m going with James. I won’t stay here.” She began to put on her gloves. It was already getting cold in the truck.

“Cassie has a point,” James admitted. “We don’t know when they’ll check the road, but we all don’t have to go.”

“Well, I’m staying here,” Denise said, crossing her arms. Cassie may be a few months older than she was, but it didn’t mean she had to listen to her, and there was no way she was going to walk out there in the dark. Besides, Cassie was being childish with that horror movie nonsense. “There could be wild animals out there and who knows what else.”

Acceptance, Rejection, and NaNoWriMo...oh, my!

Yes, I do have a lot to update today, and I wanted to get it all out of the way before my life becomes devoted to NaNoWriMo.

Today, I heard back from Wild Child Publishing about my 10,100-word horror story titled "Once Upon a December Nightmare." My story was accepted, and I am working on sending the contract to the editor-in-chief. I do not know when it will be out though. Although based on what I think I can do with revisions and such, it could be out as soon as late March, early April. I will have to discuss things with the editor to know more.

Here is the blurb about ONCE UPON A DECEMBER NIGHTMARE:
After their night of a movie and dinner is a bust, Cassie, her best friend Mary, Mary’s sister Denise, and Denise’s boyfriend James all decide to go joyriding on an old mountain road. A tree blocks their path back to the main road, so the four turn the truck around in an eerie clearing where four deer carcasses are placed. Thoroughly spooked, the four begin the seven-mile journey back to civilization. When the old truck’s lights go out, they decide to brace the cold December night and walk back to the mainroad. Their cell phones don’t work, the truck is broken down, and they aren’t the only ones out there in the forest. Something or someone is hunting them. Will they get out alive or will the ominous message of the dead deer happen to them too in their December nightmare?

The story is loosely based off an event that happened to me and my friends when we decided to go joyriding one December night. Fortunately, our nightmare did not end as tragically and horrifically.

On to the rejection, I submitted "Hounded" to The Nautilus Engine on Tuesday. On Wednesday, I got my rejection. This is what the editor said:

Hello Cherie
Thanks for letting me read "Hounded".  Unfortunately, I see a few too many Philip Marlowe take-offs (I've even written one myself).  I'm going to pass on this one but I'd be happy to read any future efforts you'd care to toss our way.  Good luck! Thank You,
Ron Warren
www.thenautilusengine.com

I'm embarrassed to say, but I had to look up Philip Marlowe. I do suppose my story is in the same vein as his, but it is also quite different. I suppose I'll just have to find a place that takes those types of stories before I submit "Hounded" elsewhere.

Now, on to NaNoWriMo, for those of you that don't know what it means, it is National Novel Writing Month, which occurs in November. The brave writers out there attempt to write an entire novel (minimum 50,000 words) all in the month of November. I have decided to make my own attempts at NaNoWriMo this year. For those that are planning to participate, please add me. My username is bookworm0753. I have my laptop coming (hopefully by Halloween), and I have my outline set to write my novel VIRTUOSO.

Here is the blurb for VIRTUOSO:
Nadia Godunov is a violin virtuoso in her freshman year at Wyderly College in Ridgewood, VA. When her drummer boyfriend, Marcus Giovanni, and she have a terrible car accident, both will never be the same. A month after the accident, Nadia wakes up, finding that her left hand is broken and that her boyfriend is dead. While she copes with her grief, she finds that moving on is hard to do. When she dreams, she senses that her boyfriend is still with her. She tries to regain proper use ofher left hand, so she can continue being the violin virtuoso she once was. She even finds a new boyfriend, medical student Derek Smith. Yet, something isn't right with young Nadia. Lately, she has been having terrible headaches, and she has found she can move things with her mind. Best or worse of all, her former boyfriend just might not be as dead as she once thought, and he wants to win her back. What is a girl to do when all she wants to do is pick up the pieces and move on with her life?

VIRTUOSO is a YA Fantasy novel with a touch of romance. Honestly, I could see this book becoming a trilogy, but for now, I'm focusing on just starting and finishing it in November.

As for other writing news, I'm still waiting to hear back from several publishers. I will keep everyone updated as I can. November I'll mainly be focused on finishing VIRTUOSO though, so please don't expect quite as many updates, although I will keep updating where I'm at with NaNoWriMo. I'm getting excited about November.

Also, Happy Halloween!

Submission: Once Upon a December Nightmare

Today I've been working on "Once Upon a December Nightmare" again. I fixed up the first "chapter," so I submitted it to Wild Child Publishing. They have been around for a few years, so I hope they are legitimate. They require a query letter, synopsis, and first chapter. If they want to see more, they will get back to me, and I'll most likely send them the rest of the story, since it is a short story. They say on their website that it can take six-eight weeks to hear back from them, so we'll have to see. *crosses fingers*
