The Bonus Short Story Reveal in Christine Rains' The 13th Floor Collection

 

Today I have the honor of revealing which bonus short story will be in Christine Rains' The 13th Floor Collection.

THE SHADOW 

 

Hunted by her clan for treason, Veenya risks not only being killed by her fellow shadow assassins, but having her heart shattered by a lover who doesn't understand her refusal of their Master's orders.

“The Shadow” is the bonus short story included in The 13th Floor Complete Collection. It takes place six months after the events in the original novellas. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and assassins are lurking in the shadows of Carmine. Somehow I get the feeling this isn't an abnormal spring in the city.

Veenya was inspired by an image I found on Dreamstime.com. I immediately could see it done as a cover as part of the series. She's mysterious, sensual, and deadly. I knew what she was and what she'd done before I even knew her name.

The tougher part was squishing a large mythos about shadow assassins and the turmoil of the romance into a few thousand words. Being concise is not something that comes natural to me. Yet I threw in sprinkles of the legends here and there, and packed some punches (so to speak!) with the romantic plot.  What I hoped to achieve was something very much like the image of Veenya, but drawn in words.
