Shades of the Shadowlands
Death used to be
mortal, but he abandoned his mortality when he discovered the entrance to the
Shadowlands. His spilled blood had opened the crevasse, and he could do nothing
to stop his downward spiral into Death’s realm.
Bluish light,
cold as ice, illuminated the Shadowlands. Stalactites dripped from the ceiling,
and he had skirted around them. He’d planned to challenge the original Death
and combat against him like heroes of old. His sword had gleamed in the pale
light. Shapes formed slowly, like a near-sighted person squinting into the
distance. Blacked shadows metamorphosed into many souls.
He’d recognized
loved ones, friends, enemies. All resided in the Shadowlands in the end, and
they had swarmed around his fading life.
But now these
shades were in his keep. The years had passed, and his lands expanded to
conform to these dearly departed souls. Death used to be a mortal man, but now
he was so much more.

Intriguing! It makes me wonder what Death was like before he abandoned mortality.
(This character actually reminds me of one I wrote about, though I never finished the novel.)

Wonderful. I love the mythology of Death you have in your world.
Loved this piece, very chilling. I particularly loved the image of the stalactites, and the shadows morphing into souls.
Nice job capturing all the subtleties in a few short lines!
