Ask the Editor: Comma before Though

First off, I'm at Rachel Morgan's blog today where she interviews me. She asks some tough questions. So please be sure to stop by.

Every 1st and 3rd Thursday, I'll take your editorial questions. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and more! I will showcase questions and answers (with permission) once I get questions as well. To ask a question, please fill out the form below.

I've been a freelance editor since November 2010. If I don't know the answer, I will find it.

Rachel Morgan asks, “Is the comma before “though” at the end of a sentence like the comma before “too” at the end of a sentence? I mean, is it sort of...optional?! Or should it always be there before the “though”? eg. I’m glad you’re here, though.”

Great question, Rachel. Personally, I’ve always put a comma before “though” at an end of a sentence. But is it optional?

Though means however or nevertheless. It is an adverb. From what I’ve found on the internet, it seems like the commas are optional like in many cases with adverbs, but I suggest saying the sentence out loud. If you pause before the “though,” then it is perfectly acceptable to place a vocative comma there.

Here is a website that talks a little bit more about this grammar issue.

I'm not sure I understand. Can I see an example. Maybe it's just my own way of speaking but I rarely, if ever, use though at the end of a sentence.

Could this be an example?

She looks sick when she wears blue. I would like to see her wearing red, though.

Yes, what you have there is a good example. I must admit I use "though" a bit too much and have had to cut back.

Here's another example: “Have you heard from Sophisa lately?”

Ugh, not this again. His eyes rolled, and he resisted the urge to smack himself in the forehead, or his sister for mentioning his former pairing. “There’s nothing we have to say about her.”

“Has she dropped by, though?”

And another example: Linia remembered Griffon’s words. She’d rather be eaten by a draken than “stay here,” though.

Hehe! Perhaps I should consider using it a bit less, but I suppose it's just how I hear the words.

I hope that helps.

I always use a comma before though.

I'm glad there's still a comma before though. It still throws me off that it isn't proper to use a comma before too any more. I keep having to delete those!

Hmm. I guess I must not use "though" that much. Great string of comments!
