Promo Monday: CHANCE OF STORM by Jenn Nixon + Interview

Today, I would like to welcome Jenn Nixon to the blog. Her novella Wild & Wicked came out in May and now the sequel Chance of a Storm is now available. You can read my review of Wild & Wicked here.

Here is what Chance of a Storm is about: Mason Storm waited three agonizing months to hear from the wild Veronica Chance after she walked out of his life and back to her world. Instead her sister calls, sobbing, and begs him to come to California. He drops everything and takes the first plane across the country to find out what happened. After a chilly welcome from General Michael Chance, Mason learns Veronica was kidnapped along with her mother who is still being held hostage. Their initial meeting is short, but Veronica is determined to get her mother back safely and asks for Mason's help knowing he can get the job done. He's eager to get involved and carefully navigates his way into the investigation while trying to figure out exactly where in stands in Veronica's eyes.

Jenn, tell us a little about yourself.

I am definitely a child of the 1980’s, a geek at heart. I love TV, Music, Movies, Video Games, Cartoons, you name it! I’m a bit of a tomboy too. I’ve lived in New Jersey most of my life, but I’ve been lucky enough to see various parts of the US over the years.

The '80s really did have some great cartoons, and I'm still an old Nintendo girl when it comes to video games. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I’ve been “writing” since elementary school. I started off with poetry and short stories. I once wrote the plot for a Unicorn Video game on the Atari. LOL! I continued writing throughout my school years but lost touch with fiction after High School. I kept a diary, so I was still writing in a sense, but it wasn’t the same. I began writing fan fiction in my 20’s and actually completed one all the way through! (Star Wars, told you I was a geek) I was super excited and proud of myself, and from there I never stopped. Wrote a few screenplays, short stories, and novels that are still collecting cyber dust on my hard drive, but I never considered myself a writer until I sold my first novel. It was poorly written, interesting plot, decent characters, but it’s that first book everyone likes to forget and I’m no exception.

Fan fiction is a great way to practice writing and I admire anyone who could keep a diary. Tell us about the genres you write and what you love about them.

I write Science Fiction, Suspense-Thrillers, Romance, and YA and combinations of all four on occasion. I still write poetry on occasion, it’s probably my first love. I love Science Fiction because you can honestly do anything if you can make the reader believe it. Romance just creeps into my writing whether I want it there for not. The way I look at it, it’s a part of life and it shouldn’t be ignored in fiction. It doesn’t always have to be explicit and steamy but it shouldn’t be overlooked. My favorite to write, however, is the Suspense-Thriller-Mystery type fiction. I love page turners. I love trying to solve something. I love it when my heart pound because someone is in danger or desperately searching for answers. Regardless of the primary genre, a little bit of Suspense, Thrillers, or Mystery (sometimes all three) become a large part of the story.

I love suspense, thrillers, and mystery. That was what I loved about your Wild & Wicked: the elements of mystery with romance and delicious steamy scenes. What inspired you to write it?

A simple idea inspired Wild & Wicked. “A girl goes to work at a strip club looking for ‘something’ and meets a hot former detective who wants to help her.” I didn’t know what to do with it for the longest time, but then I found a publisher who offered me the chance to write novellas for their line. From there, the idea blossomed. I had so much fun writing it, I had to do a sequel, Chance of a Storm, which just came out July 15th!

I can't wait to read Chance of a Storm! What other projects are you working on? Do you have anything else coming out soon?

Chance of a Storm, the sequel to Wild & Wicked is out now and my Romantic Suspense, Lucky’s Charm from Wild Child Publishing should be out later this year (maybe early next, not sure yet!).

I have a Sci-Fi Romance that I’m shopping around to agents while working on its sequel and another Romantic Suspense WIP that I’m kinda stuck on right now.

Lucky's Charm looks good, so hopefully it'll be out sooner rather than later. Good luck with your other works! What advice would you give to writers?

If you love writing, never give up. There are so many opportunities out there to get your work into publication these days! I would of course suggest that an author do lots and lots of research. Learn how to write a great query letter and synopsis, learn the basics of writing fiction: Showing Vs. Telling, Point of View, Eliminating crutch words and passive voice, Pacing and Plotting…etc. It’s not as easy as one may think to write a cohesive novel with a beginning, middle, and end. There are rules, some you can break and some you probably shouldn’t…but then again, there are some that you can bend!

So true. And, you should only break rules once you've master them. Thanks, Jenn.
