Purrsonal Stories: Never Laugh at a Man with a Chainsaw

Back in December 2012, I wrote up five things I learned from horror movies on Alex J. Cavanaugh's blog. I added a bonus six one from a personal story: Don't laugh at guys with chainsaws. Julie Flanders was curious about the story, so I thought it would be perfect for October's purrsonal stories.

When I was eight, several friends, their parents, and I went to Dixie Caverns' haunted cave. Two sisters, let's call them Denise and Mary as they are the very ones from Once Upon a December Nightmare, their parents, their cousin Cathy (not her real name), and I arrived there a weekend night before Halloween. We toured the gift shop and bought our tickets.

Then, we stood outside the gaping cave entrance for what felt like an hour before we were allowed inside.

Spooky music and the cool cave air surrounded us. We walked in a huddle with our group. Lights sparked to our left. A creepy cackle echoed farther away. Ghouls and goblins groaned. We continued on. Step by step. Scary attraction by scary attraction. Except I wasn't really scared. Cathy and I started to find the "spooky" sets more funny than terrifying.

Then, we came upon a man with a chainsaw.

Our own laughter cackled as we taunted the man. We said things like, "You're not real." and "You don't scare me." We were two eight year old girls, and we were mocking a dude with a chainsaw.

I guess he had enough. He pulled the cord, and the chainsaw roared to life.

As he ran toward us, our laughter died away and we darted behind a woman we didn't even know. We crouched down, so he wouldn't spot us. After all, the chainsaw could've been a tad more real than we once thought.

We were much more subdued when we finished with the haunted cave too.

That's why, folks, you should never laugh at a man with a chainsaw.

I would have peed in my pants. I'm not kidding. I am the world's biggest scaredy cat and I make it a point to stay far, far away from any haunted house/cave/prison/torture zone.

That's really good life advice though. Making a mental note right now to never laugh at someone holding a chainsaw :)

I would've run as well!
Won't mock anyone with a chainsaw.

LOL, I remember that post you wrote on Alex's site! I would have run too, even now as an adult. Lesson learned LOL.

HA! Too funny. Chainsaws in those places ARE terrifying! especially if they start when you aren't expecting it. Only think you should be laughing at is a boggart!

I'm laughing at this story, but I would've done the same thing.

Oh, I would never, ever laugh at a man with a chainsaw, never. Sorry, mildly afraid of the things. Can't say why. I'm guessing a past life experience. They completely freak me out and my mind creates the most horrible images. Yuck! Cute story, I would have done the same thing, even if I held the knowledge that the chain wasn't on it. Would have ran like heck!

Indeed, you should never laugh at someone with a chainsaw! Haha. I remember going through the Dixie Caverns haunted cave when I was little. I think the darkness scared me more than anything.

*LOL* Great story. I always laugh when I see the people running from the dude with the chainsaw in a haunted fun house. I never flinch, so the guy always goes after someone else. Guys with chainsaws like a bit of sport, after all!

Would not go to a haunted house - yeah, I'm the biggest scaredy cat ever - and yet I'm running the Bwahahaha Halloween Tour on my blog. Funny - how this is my favorite holiday and this year I'm avoiding all the scary movies on TV. Home alone on Sunday night, and did not watch the Walking Dead - couldn't. I've turned into a wimp!!!!!!

Whoa! Whoever that guy was, he sure seemed to derive pleasure from scaring little kids. Goodness....

But, this is a fun little anecdote. :)

Your advice sounds good to me! I am sure that was a petrifying episode and I can picture the scene so well. I once tripped at a haunted house when a guy with a Jason mask came up right behind me and started a chainsaw. The sudden noise freaked me out and I started to run, but there was a slight hole in the ground. I guess you and I shouldn't visit haunted houses together. :)

Thanks for sharing!

Some poor guy was actually standing there for hours, holding a heavy chainsaw, frozen like a statue, while people walked by him?? Holy cow -- he really must be supernatural because I don't think a normal human could do that!! Fun story!! :-)

Hey but was he for real, or just a special effect? I'm intrigued to know.....

Good story, Cherie!

Oh, gosh, this would've freaked me out so much. Not surprised at all that you ran!
